(AP) ? Dozens of couples in jeans, shorts, white dresses and the occasional military uniform filled San Francisco City Hall on Saturday as clerks resumed issuing marriage licenses one day after a federal appeals court removed the last obstacle to making same-sex matrimony legal again in California.

Although a few clerk's offices around the state stayed open late on Friday, San Francisco was the only jurisdiction to hold weekend hours so same-sex couples could take advantage of their newly restored right, Clerk Karen Hong said.

A sign posted on the door of the office where a long line of couples waited to fill out applications listed the price for a license, a ceremony or both above the words "Equality=Priceless."

"We really wanted to make this happen," Hong said, adding that her whole staff and a group of volunteers came into work without having to be asked. "It's spontaneous, which is great in its own way."

The timing could not have been better for California National Guard Capt. Michael Potoczniak, 38, and his partner of 10 years, Todd Saunders, 47, of El Cerrito.

Potoczniak, who joined the Guard after the military's ban on openly gay service was repealed almost two years ago, is scheduled to fly out Sunday night for a month of basic training in Texas.

"I woke up this morning, shook him awake and said, 'Let's go," said Potoczniak, who chose to get married in his Army uniform. "It's something that people need to see because everyone is so used to uniforms at military weddings."

The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for gay marriage to return to the nation's most populous state by ruling 5-4 on Wednesday that the sponsors of California's voter-approved ban on same-sex unions lacked authority to defend the measure in court.

Also Wednesday, the Supreme Court overturned the federal law that prevented the government from awarding federal benefits to same sex couples, a decision with extra significance for military couples such as Saunders and Potoczniak.

"It scared me, honestly, before this all happened, that something could happen to me," Potoczniak said, "Things like my body, who would take care of him, even just getting the health insurance...It gives me a lot more peace of mind to know that the Army is taking care of us."

Also waiting to wed Saturday were Scott Kehoe, 34, and his fiancee, Aurelien Bricker, 24. After finding out on Facebook that the city was issuing same-sex marriage licenses Friday, the San Francisco couple rushed out to Tiffany's to buy wedding rings.

"We were afraid of further legal challenges in the state," Kehoe said.

Bricker is a French citizen living in the United States on a student visa, and the couple has contemplated moving to France once he completes his studies next year.

Now that the Defense of Marriage Act has been struck down and California's gay marriage ban lifted, Kehoe can sponsor his husband for U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

Hong said 81 same-sex couples wed in San Francisco on Friday just hours after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a brief order saying it has dissolved a stay it imposed on gay marriages while a lawsuit challenging the ban, known as Proposition 8, worked its way through the courts.

Within hours of the appeals court's action Friday, the two lead plaintiffs who in 2009 sued to overturn Proposition 8, Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier of Berkeley, became the first couple to marry in San Francisco in a hastily arranged ceremony.

The city, home to both a federal trial court that struck down Proposition 8 as unconstitutional and the 9th Circuit, has been the epicenter of the state's gay marriage movement since then-Mayor Gavin Newsom ordered his administration in February 2004 to issue licenses to gay couples in defiance of state law.

A little more than four years later, the California Supreme Court, which is also based in San Francisco, struck down the state's one-man, one-woman marriage laws.

City Hall was the scene of many more marriages in the 4 1/2 months before a coalition of religious conservative groups successfully campaigned for the November 2008 passage of Proposition 8, which amended the state constitution to outlaw same-sex marriages.

Standing amid the beaming couples on Saturday, John Lewis and Stuart Gaffney of the advocacy group Marriage Equality USA looked like proud fathers. The men have been together 26 years, got married in February 2004, had their union invalidated six months later and then became one of the 18,000 couples estimated to have tied the knot in California before Proposition 8 was enacted.

"I don't think getting a license means as much to anyone who hasn't worked so long for it and fought so hard for it," Gaffney said. "It's been a very long engagement."

'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Spoilers: Four New Characters Arrive at Whitmore College While Others Explore New Opportunities

Despite the hot summer sun, the vampires of Mystic Falls never rest. There's no time to sleep. There's no time to hide from the sun. They must take full advantage of their time off, and that's exactly what they're doing. Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev are both spending their vacation starring in feature films, and now other members of "The Vampire Diaries" cast are following suit.

Like Us on Facebook

Sara Canning, who plays Jenna Sommers on the show, recently joined the cast of the untitled psychological drama centered on Eadweard Muybridge, according to Hollywood Reporter. Canning will play the role of Muybridge's wife.

Muybridge was a famous photographer in the 19th Century who shot pictures of nude and deformed subjects. He then got his first taste of fame after pioneering motion photography. He captured animals and humans in action and paved the way for motion pictures with a zoopraxiscope device. Here's the eerie twist: he killed his wife's lover and received a justifiable homicide verdict.

While some actors are exploring various opportunities, others are joining "The Vampire Diaries" crew. Wetpaint reports that four new characters will be making their way to Whitmore College.

Nadia is "emotional and beautiful" and has been travelling far and wide with a "vengeance." Jesse is an upperclassman at Whitmore that becomes involved with the Mystic Falls gang. Megan is "too smart for her own good," and finally, Tessa is "a nobleman's daughter," which hints at a potential flashback.

Season 5 will take place primarily at Whitmore College, and aside from the additional characters, life at college will open the door for new experiences and opportunities. "We're definitely going to be entering an entire new world at Whitmore College, so we'll get to meet new friends and new enemies," said executive producer Julie Plec. "There'll be a lot of new people entering our universe that we'll get to know well - and then also maybe some new romantic interests for some of our characters."

"The Vampire Diaries" will return to The CW October 10.

Pro football player Hernandez charged with murder

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) ? New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder in the shooting death of a friend prosecutors say had angered the football player at a nightclub a few days earlier by talking to the wrong people.

Hernandez, 23, was taken from his North Attleborough home in handcuffs just over a week after Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd's bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park about a mile away.

Less than two hours after the arrest, the Patriots announced they had cut Hernandez, a 2011 Pro Bowl selection who signed a five-year contract worth $40 million last summer.

Lloyd was a 27-year-old athlete with the Boston Bandits who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee. He was shot repeatedly in the back and chest, authorities said.

Hernandez "orchestrated the crime from the beginning," prosecutor Bill McCauley said.

If convicted, the NFL player could get life in prison without parole.

"It is at bottom a circumstantial case. It is not a strong case," his attorney, Michael Fee, said at a court hearing during which Hernandez was ordered held without bail on murder charges and five weapons counts.

Lloyd's family members cried and hugged in the courtroom as the prosecutor outlined the killing. Two relatives were so overcome with emotion that they had to leave the courtroom.

McCauley said the crime stemmed from a night out at a Boston club called Rumor on June 14. He said Hernandez was upset about certain things, including that Lloyd had talked to some people Hernandez "had troubles with."

Two days later, McCauley said, on the night of June 16, Hernandez texted two friends from out of state and asked them to hurry back to Massachusetts.

Surveillance footage from outside Hernandez's home showed him leaving with a gun, and he told someone in the house that he was upset and couldn't trust anyone anymore, the prosecutor said.

The three men picked up Lloyd at his home around 2:30 a.m., according to authorities. As they drove around, they discussed what happened at the nightclub, and Lloyd started getting nervous, McCauley said.

Lloyd texted his sister, "Did you see who I am with?" When she asked who, he answered, at 3:22 a.m., "NFL," then, a minute later, "Just so you know."

Within a few minutes, people working the overnight shift at the industrial park reported hearing gunshots, McCauley said.

Investigators did not specify who fired the shots and did not identify the two other people who were with Hernandez.

Hernandez had recently installed a surveillance system and had 14 cameras inside and outside the house, according to McCauley, who said Detectives found footage was missing from the six or eight hours after the slaying.

In arguing unsuccessfully for bail, Hernandez's attorney said the athlete is unlikely to flee, is a homeowner, and lives with his fiancee and an 8-month-old baby. He also said Hernandez had never been accused of a violent crime.

As he was led from his home in the morning, Hernandez was wearing a white V-neck T-shirt, with his arms inside the shirt and behind his back. He spit into some bushes on his way to a police cruiser.

Later, as he was taken from the North Attleborough police station to court, two dozen supporters cheered, some yelling, "We love you, Aaron!"

"Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation," the Patriots said in a statement announcing he had been cut.

The team added: "We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."

The Patriots drafted Hernandez, who is originally from Bristol, Conn., in 2010 out of the University of Florida, where he was an All-American.

During the draft, one team said it wouldn't take him under any circumstances, and he was passed over by one club after another before New England took him in the fourth round.

Afterward, Hernandez said he had failed a drug test in college ? reportedly for marijuana ? and was up front with teams about it.

In other off-the-field troubles, a Florida man filed a lawsuit last week claiming Hernandez shot him in the face after they argued at a strip club in February.

And The Boston Globe reported that Hernandez lost his temper and threatened a teammate during an argument in the team's weight room shortly after he was drafted.

Hernandez became a father on Nov. 6, and said he intended to change his ways: "Now, another one is looking up to me. I can't just be young and reckless Aaron no more. I'm going to try to do the right things."

Disney Armie Hammer The Lone Ranger No Mask Armie Hammer Spotted on Captain America 2 Set; Is He Going To Play Ant Man?

While Disney and Marvel Studios prepare for the home video release of?Iron Man 3 as it nears the end of its theatrical run, and while?Captain America 2, Thor 2 and?Guardians of the Galaxy overlap production, Marvel?s placed the attention of fans even further into the future. Adding to the five confirmed features releasing between and the end of 2015, there are three unannounced Marvel Studios films with dates in 2016-17.

The three projects were made official over the last two weeks, representing the bulk of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which kicks off with?Ant-Man in November 2015. With Marvel now expected to release details on their?new slate of upcoming projects at Comic-Con next month, will we finally learn who will star in?Ant-Man?

Looking past rumors about the two new characters, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, joining Joss Whedon?s?Avengers sequel, one of the most important characters Marvel must cast in the near future is the protagonist spearheading Phase Three. It may be a stretch, but Armie Hammer (The Social Network)?earning his spot in the Disney family by starring as the titular character alongside Disney go-to-man?Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger, makes us curious as to whether or not Dsiney and Marvel have him eyed to one day joins Earth?s Mightiest. Why would we think that? He recently visited the set of Captain America: The Winter Soldier so?during Disney?s press junket for?The Lone Ranger?last week, Amy Nicholson asked him.

Ant-Man costume from Edgar Wright?s test footage

Hammer?s awkward, dodgy and at times, funny responses to the topic really got us thinking.

So, you and Edgar Wright visited the?Captain America 2?set?

Me and Edgar? Who?s Edgar? The actor?

The director. Edgar Wright.

Edgar Wright?

Is this an act? If this is an act, you?re convincing.

No, it?s not an act. Who?s Edgar Wright?

The supposed director of?Ant-Man.

Of what?

Ant-Man.

Ant-Man??Oh! Wait! You think you know something! No, there?s nothing! What do you know? What?s the rumor?

That you were spotted on the?Captain America 2?set with Edgar Wright.

No, there?s nothing.

Really?

Yeah!

Really.

I promise. I promise-promise. Ant-Man?

You?re saying it like you?ve never heard of him before.

No, I know the character Ant-Man?like, the comic book character.

You can?t tell me that this is the first time you?ve heard the rumor that you?re playing Ant-Man.

First in my life. I swear to god, cross my heart, hope to die. Amy! [Turns to his publicist Amy, who says, '"I've never heard of that ever ever. Who's Ant-Man?"] They make him shrink! You?re a news-breaker right there.

Potentially fictitious, apparently.

Well, it works. [Fake enthusiasm] I?m doing?Ant-Man, I?m?very?excited about it. Me and Edgar.

Congrats.

I did go visit the set, though. Not with Edgar.

With who?

Just by myself.

Any reason?

Um? a buddy of mine was working on the movie so I just wanted to go say hi.

Ant Man 2015 Release Date Armie Hammer Spotted on Captain America 2 Set; Is He Going To Play Ant Man?

From pretending to not know anything to admitting he was on the set of Captain America 2. Maybe Mr. Hammer was just going to visit a friend, maybe it was something more. With rumors that we?ll meet the?Guardians of the Galaxy at Comic-Con, and that the event may see?Doctor Strange?finally become an official part of Marvel?s big screen future, it would be the place to announce any major castings as well. Ant-Man is still quite a while away but with its 2015 release date, it should begin shooting late next year. Marvel president and film producer Kevin Feige spoke earlier this year about the casting of?Ant-Man?which may provide a hint on the timeline of casting:

?We?ve talked about various names over the past eight years, but as you can imagine, they keep changing as time goes by. But toward the end of this year, we?ll buckle down and start casting and start refining the script.?

Would Armie Hammer make for a good Ant-Man? Would you like to see him play another character in the MCU? Here are 10 actors we listed a while back for who could play?Ant-Man.

Two goals in 17 seconds give Blackhawks the Cup

BOSTON (AP) ? Two hours after clinching the Stanley Cup title, a handful of Chicago Blackhawks wandered back out onto the TD Garden ice in their street clothes.

Two of them walked gingerly over to the corner and recreated the goals that brought the NHL season to a stunning conclusion. A few took swigs from Champagne bottles. Some posed for pictures. Others took them.

The Blackhawks celebrated their second Stanley Cup championship in four seasons on Monday night, coming from behind when Bryan Bickell and Dave Bolland scored 17 seconds apart in the final 1:16 to beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 and take the best-of-seven series in six games.

"This goal, the ending ? nobody saw it coming," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "You just hope. And we tied it up and the other one was icing on the cake. But nobody foresaw either one coming.

"That series and the pace that we just saw for six straight games was an amazing series," he said. "Commend both teams for leaving it out there."

Seventy-six seconds away from defeat and a trip home for a decisive seventh game, Bickell tied and, while the Bruins were settling in for another overtime in a series that has already had its share, Bolland scored to give Chicago the lead.

The back-to-back scores in about the time it takes for one good rush down the ice turned a near-certain loss into a championship clincher, stunning Boston's players and their fans, and starting the celebration on the Blackhawks' bench with 59 seconds to play.

"We thought we were going home for Game 7. You still think you're going to overtime and you're going to try to win it there. Then Bolly scores a huge goal 17 seconds later," said Chicago forward Patrick Kane, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason's most valuable player. "It feels like the last 58 seconds were an eternity."

The team that set an NHL record with a 24-game unbeaten streak to start the lockout-shortened season won three straight after falling behind 2-1 in the finals, rallying from a deficit in the series and in its finale. Corey Crawford made 23 saves, and Jonathan Toews returned from injury to add a goal and an assist in the first finals between Original Six teams since 1979.

"I still can't believe that finish. Oh, my God, we never quit," Crawford said. "I never lost confidence. No one in our room ever did."

Trailing 2-1 with Crawford sent off for an extra skater, the Blackhawks converted when Toews fed it in front and Bickell scored from the edge of the crease to tie the score.

Perhaps the Bruins expected it to go to overtime, as three of the first four games in the series did. They seemed to be caught off-guard on the ensuing faceoff.

Chicago skated into the zone and Johnny Oduya sent a shot on net that deflected off Michael Frolik and the post before landing right in front of Bolland.

He chipped it in, and the Blackhawks knew it was over.

The Chicago players who'd been on the ice gathered in the corner, while those on the bench began jumping up and down. It was only a minute later, with Boston's Tuukka Rask off for an extra man, that the Blackhawks withstood the final push and swarmed over the boards, throwing their sticks and gloves across the ice.

"I don't think there's any question, even though ? let's face it ? today was a little bit of luck, we're still the best team in the league," Oduya said. "We proved that during the year, and we proved that during the playoffs. Lot of things have to break right for you, they did tonight, but sometimes the great teams make their own breaks."

The Bruins got 28 saves from Rask, who was hoping to contribute to an NHL title after serving as Tim Thomas' backup when Boston won it all two years ago.

"It's obviously shocking when you think you have everything under control," Rask said quietly, standing at his locker with a blue baseball cap on backward and a towel draped over his shoulders.

The sold-out TD Garden was chanting "We want the Cup!" after Milan Lucic's goal put the Bruins up 2-1 with eight minutes left, but it fell silent when Boston coughed up the lead. The team came out to salute its fans as they streamed out of the building for the last time, from the air conditioning into the summer air.

"Probably toughest for sure, when you know you're a little bit over a minute left and you feel that you've got a chance to get to a Game 7," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "And then those two goals go in quickly."

The arena was almost empty ? except for a few hundred fans in red Blackhawks sweaters who filtered down to the front rows ? when NHL commissioner Gary Bettman handed the 35-pound Cup to Toews, who left Game 5 with an undisclosed injury and wasn't confirmed for the lineup until the morning skate.

The Chicago captain skated with the Cup right over the crease in which the Blackhawks mounted the comeback and in front of the fans in Blackhawks sweaters who lined up along the front row behind the net. Toews banged on the glass while the remaining Bruins fans headed up the runways.

He then continued the tradition of handing it from player to player before the team settled to the side of the faceoff circle for a picture with the trophy they will possess for the next 12 months.

Just like in 2010, they won it in a Game 6 on the road.

"In 2010, we didn't really know what we were doing. We just ... we played great hockey and we were kind of oblivious to how good we were playing," said Toews, who scored his third goal of the playoffs to tie it 1-1 in the second period, then fed Bickell for the score that tied it with 76 seconds to play.

"This time around, we know definitely how much work it takes and how much sacrifice it takes to get back here and this is an unbelievable group," Toews said. "We've been through a lot together this year and this is a sweet way to finish it off."

The Blackhawks opened the season on a 21-0-3 streak and coasted to the Presidents' Trophy that goes to the team with the best regular-season record. But regular-season excellence has not translated into playoff success: Chicago is the first team with the best record to win the Cup since the 2008 Detroit Red Wings.

The Blackhawks went through Minnesota in five games and Detroit in seven, rallying in the Western Conference semifinals from a 3-1 deficit and winning Game 7 in overtime. They got through the defending NHL champion Los Angeles Kings in five games to return to the Cup finals, where Boston was waiting.

Chicago won the first game at home in three overtimes but dropped Game 2 ? another overtime ? and fell behind 2-1 in the series when it returned to Boston.

After that, it was all Blackhawks.

The tightly contested finals ? with three games going a total of five overtimes ? may help fans forget the lockout that shortened the season to 48 games and pushed back the opener to Jan. 19. That left the teams still playing ice hockey on a 95-degree day in Boston on June 24, matching the latest date in NHL history.

A Game 7 would have excited most hockey fans even more, and the series seemed to be heading there for the sixth time in 10 years before Bickell and Bolland turned it around.

"Dave Bolland, what else can you say about that guy?" Kane said. "He just shows up in big playoff games."

NOTES: The Blackhawks are 2-5 against the Bruins in playoff series. This was the teams' first matchup in the finals. ... Bolland missed the entire first-round series with an injury. ... Kane and Toews had no goals in the first three games. ... Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing, was honored before the game. He went onto the ice with a walker and stood up to receive cheers from the crowd.

Police dog killed, officer shot in Indiana standoff

By Elisha Fieldstadt, NBC News

A K-9 officer was shot and killed in Sellersburg, Indiana at the start of a nine-hour police standoff with a man who fled from and shot at?officers trying to serve him with a warrant on Monday, police said.

Sellersburg police officers approached a man with a warrant and he ran away and then fired several shots, said Sellersburg Police Trooper Brock McCooe. The shots?hit a police dog and a deputy.

The human officer was shot in the leg and was in stable condition at a nearby hospital, but the K-9 officer was fatally wounded, said McCooe.

According to NBC affiliate Wave 3 News, the dog's name was Kilo, and he had assisted with numerous drug busts.

The suspect ran into a house? that was empty at the time and barricaded himself inside, officials said.

Judy Frazier lives three houses away from where the suspect holed up, and said she had not been able to leave her own home for most of the afternoon and evening.

?The SWAT teams are on roofs they?re in yards, they?re everywhere,? she said while the standoff continued.

McCooe said the suspect finally responded to commands through a loudspeaker a little after 9:30 p.m. ?He just walked out and gave up,? he said.

In a statement following the suspect?s surrender, Sellersburg Police Chief Russ Whelan said the man came out of a closet and then emerged out of the backdoor wearing a torn up t-shirt and his boxer shorts. He was unarmed and not injured even though Whelan said police had thrown about 40 tear gas canisters into the house.

?Now the work starts as far as processing the scene and collecting the evidence and building our case,? said Whelan.

Authorities on Monday night had not yet released the name of the captured man.

The wounded officer, Chris Proctor, is a member of the Clark County SWAT team, who were early to the scene to assist Sellersburg police. Clark County Sheriff Daniel Rodden said Proctor will have surgery on his knee on Tuesday morning but is ?in good spirits.?

UK, China Reach Currency Deal ? Wall Street Journal | Latest ...

China and Britain have reached a three-year deal to swap their currencies when needed, the first such agreement between Beijing and a major developed economy and a move that could help boost the Chinese yuan outside Asia.

In a statement released late Saturday, the Bank of England said Governor Mervyn King and his counterpart at the People?s Bank of China, Zhou Xiaochuan, signed an agreement to set up a three-year swap line with a maximum value of 200 billion yuan ($ 32.6 billion). It means that Bank of England could draw on the line with the PBOC when there is a sudden shortage of yuan funds in the U.K. market?and make the yuan, also known as renminbi, available to banks under its jurisdiction.

China?s central bank has increasingly used such bilateral currency-swap deals in its effort to promote the yuan in global trade and finance. So far, the PBOC has signed nearly two trillion yuan worth of currency-swap deals with some 20 countries and regions, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand, Argentina and Malaysia. Most of the pacts so far have been with emerging economies in the Asian-Pacific region and don?t include major economies such as the U.S., Japan and those in the euro zone.

These currency lines, though rarely tapped, could enhance foreign investors? confidence in trading of the yuan. ?The bilateral swaps are a backstop of sorts but are still needed to help facilitate the growth of renminbi in foreign markets, especially if challenging liquidity conditions were to emerge,? said Paul Mackel, head of Asian currency research at HSBC Holdings PLC in Hong Kong. The deal with Britain ?is not just a symbolic move because it will help support the overall depth and liquidity of renminbi? in the U.K. market, he added.

An expansion of yuan trading into London could help China advance its goal of turning the yuan into an international currency, a key part of its broader push to open up its financial system. Currently, Beijing maintains a tight leash on cross-border fund flows, making it difficult for the yuan to accumulate overseas.

Chinese officials in recent months have increased their rhetoric toward making the yuan a freer currency, hinting that a plan on yuan convertibility would be proposed later this year and include steps aimed at allowing freer flows of its currency and ways to let Chinese individuals make overseas investments.

Some scholars within China expect the yuan to become basically convertible as early as 2015, though Chinese officials have never given a timeline for how soon that would occur. The timing would depend on progress in China?s efforts to overhaul its creaky financial system and open its capital account?efforts that could be slowed if China?s economy sputters or its financial system hits turbulence.

U.K. bankers and politicians are counting on the yuan to help cement London?s role as the center for global foreign-exchange trading. This comes as cities such as Singapore, Tokyo, Taipei, Luxembourg and Kuala Lumpur are all exploring the possibility of becoming offshore yuan trading hubs?a status only the Chinese territory of Hong Kong currently enjoys.

Since early last year, bankers hoping for a surge in yuan business in London have lobbied Downing Street to set up a currency swap line with Beijing, according to banking executives involved in the discussions. But initially, U.K. policy makers had largely left it to the private sector to figure out ways to boost yuan trading. Nonetheless, talks on a potential swap line between Beijing and London continued as a lack of yuan liquidity in the London market has become one of the biggest challenges to the city?s ambitions.

Britain already has swap lines with the U.S. Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan, though they haven?t been used much other than at the height of the global financial crisis. Early this year, Bank of England said that a consensus had been reached between the bank and the PBOC to facilitate discussions on the establishment of a three-year renminbi-sterling currency swap line.

In the Saturday statement, Mr. King said the deal will help support U.K.?s domestic financial stability. ?In the unlikely event that a generalized shortage of offshore renminbi liquidity emerges, the bank will have the capability to facilitate renminbi liquidity to eligible institutions in the U.K.,? Mr. King said.

Yuan trading in London has grown rapidly in the past year as more U.K. businesses and investors start to embrace the currency: Daily yuan trading in London more than doubled in the year to June 2012, to $ 1.7 billion, according to a recent survey by Bourse Consult for the City of London. But that still pales in comparison to yuan trading in Hong Kong. Average daily yuan trading volume in the territory rose to a record $ 63.6 billion last month, according to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.

PBOC officials have said similar agreements with other countries would depend on whether there is demand. ?This is a market-driven process,? Yi Gang, a deputy PBOC governor, said in March. ?I think if both parties think a swap agreement is helpful, why not do it??

LeapFrog shows off $150 LeapPad Ultra tablet, arriving July 17th (hands-on)

LeapFrog

LeapFrog's latest tablet just couldn't wait to show off for the camera, making its on-screen debut over at the FCC's site a few weeks back. The kid-friendly tech company was finally ready to show the thing off for real this week, almost exactly a year after letting us take a look at the previous-generation device. The slate, naturally, maintains the kid-friendly software and rugged design that have become customary across LeapFrog's hardware offerings, while adding enough new features to let the company confidently refer to the LeapPad Ultra as "the ultimate kids learning tablet." Though they might be just a tad biased when it comes to such overarching statements.

The Ultra's got a 7-inch, 1,024 x 600 touchscreen display that works with an stylus to help kids learn to write with something other than their fingers (making it not too unlike the LeapReader in that respect). There are front- and rear-facing cameras for its built-in imaging programs and 8GB of storage for downloading some of the 800-plus LeapFrog-approved apps downloadable from the company's App Center (which wasn't ready to demo when we looked at the hardware). The choices include proprietary apps and selections from partners like Pixar and Sesame Street. The tablet's got all kinds of parental protection, including secure WiFi and a four-digit code for updating. And while there's an included chat app (Pet Chat), communication is limited to other LeapPads, using a limited number of canned responses.

Clegg shares his concerns over legal aid plans ? full transcript

I spent half an hour on a train with Nick Clegg yesterday, chatting to him about a range of subjects for an interview that will run on the site later this week. After the interview I tweeted about Clegg?s interesting answer to my question to him on legal aid, and a journalist I know from the Mail on Sunday got in touch to say the paper was running a story on the subject and would be interested in seeing his answer. Here?s the Mail?s take:

A cabinet split over plans to cut legal aid deepened last night as Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg signalled his concerns for the first time.

The Liberal Democrat leader said it was ?perverse? to stop people choosing their own solicitor and claimed small high street law firms would suffer ? rather than the ?fat cat QCs? targeted by Justice Secretary Chris Grayling.

Asked about the reforms by lawyer and Lib Dem activist Nick Thornsby in Manchester yesterday, Mr Clegg said: ?You could say it?s perverse that a Government with Conservatives in it is reducing public choice rather than increasing it.

?The only straitjacket on all of this is the need to yield about ?220?million of savings in legal aid in criminal cases.

?But on the back of the consultation we should see? if there are alternative, less disruptive, less unpopular ways of delivering that.?

The comments come after the Conservative Attorney-General came out on the side of lawyers who are angry at the changes.

Dominic Grieve said he could do little about the plan ? because ?policy in this area is owned by the Lord Chancellor, and not me?.

But he promised he would ?endeavour to ensure, as far as I can, that the decision? he reaches in due course is? a fully informed one?.

The piece captures fairly the thrust of Clegg?s response. He clearly has reservations about the proposals and is obviously open to savings being made in other ways which don?t damage access to justice.

My full interview will run later this week, but for now the full transcript of our exchange on legal aid is reproduced below:

NT: Do you agree that the backlash against Price Competitive Tendering and the further [proposed] cuts from the legal aid budget have been of a different magnitude [to the usual protestations]? It?s not just barristers [speaking out], it?s judges, it?s legal aid firms, even the Attorney General?s own panel of lawyers.

NC: I accept that on two particular areas there has been a very strong reaction from a very wide range of people and actually in many ways the thing I have been most struck by is decent, hard-working high street lawyers in my own neck of the woods in Sheffield who are not fat cat QCs ? far from it: these are really decent people whose heart and soul is in the work they do ? who tell me two things that they are particularly distressed by. First that the plan as it?s presently crafted would remove the choice of their clients to move from one lawyer to another.

NT: It seems perverse at a time when we?re giving people more choice in their public services [that we would reduce it in another area].

NC: Well you could say it is perverse that a government with Conservatives in it is reducing public choice rather than increasing it. That?s the first point they [high street firms] make. The second point is [about] replacing what is a highly fragmented market of providers with one which is basically organised around fixed contracts administered by bureaucracy in London. Obviously they have a self-interest in saying they think might lose out in that but more generally they imply that would damage quality.

So I think on choice and quality I?ve listened very carefully to what?s been said. Chris Grayling and Tom McNally to be fair to them have been very open about the fact that they have to make the savings ? around ?220 million ? [but] they?re not dogmatic about how that saving can be made, if the industry can show them how the saving can be made in ways which are considered to be less offensive or disruptive.

The consultation as you know has just closed. I will shortly be asking Chris Grayling and Tom McNally for an update on what the response to the consultation has been, which I suspect will reflect the a lot of the criticisms I?ve just talked to and then we?ll look at it.

The only straitjacket on all of this unfortunately is the need to yield about ?220 million or thereabouts worth of savings in legal aid in criminal cases, but I can?t stress enough if on the back of the consultation we can see that there are alternative ways, less disruptive ways, less unpopular ways if you like of delivering that, there?s no ideological attachment in the coalition government per se to those particular measures.

There is unfortunately a financial attachment, if I can put it that way, to delivering savings.

So, you know, I have engaged with this a lot as a constituency MP and I have been struck with the strength of feeling.

* Nick Thornsby is Thursday Editor of Liberal Democrat Voice and blogs here.

Cystic Fibrosis and Relationships: How Do We Communicate?

Guest post by Katie Broekema

Hello everyone! This is Katie, I am back again to tell you what is going on in my life right now. To see some of the lessons I have learned from cystic fibrosis and running, click here. If you read my bio, you saw that I am currently a graduate student at Central Michigan University. But what my bio does not tell you is the path that I took to get there. I have always thought that school was something to do to get you where you want to go, but when I was a senior in college I realized I had no idea where I wanted to go. I was a computer science and communication major; do not ask me why or how, because I could not tell you. I just fell into both fields thinking I would find what I wanted to do, and then suddenly it was graduation time and I still had no idea. Sometime early in the fall semester I followed my nose to a meeting. I had no idea what was going on, all I knew was that there was Pizza Hut pizza there; I slowly learned it was a graduate communication program recruitment visit from CMU. I figured there was no harm in applying for the program; I was shocked when I was accepted with a graduate assistantship. So I went into this program with the idea that this would buy me 2 more years to discover what I wanted to do. I have just finished my first year of that program, and I now have a totally different attitude. I know what I want to do with the rest of my life! It is thus amazing feeling, like a total sense of euphoria. I actually enjoy reading thousands of article pages: I am looking forward to writing my 150 page thesis. So now you may be asking yourself, what is this magical area of interest? Well I will tell you; it is Cystic Fibrosis.

It started out so innocently; I had to write a class paper so I picked something that I knew about and that I thought would be easy, how people with Cystic Fibrosis communicate. I did this all the time in science classes and when I had to give speeches, why would it not work now? I was duped in this process, but in a good way. Once I began my research, I remembered a conversation that I had several years ago with a high school girl who had Cystic Fibrosis. She asked me how I had told my boyfriend about my Cystic Fibrosis, because she also had Cystic Fibrosis and she wanted to tell this guy but she did not know how. This sparked my interest in how to share Cystic Fibrosis-related information with a significant other, and it is a topic that has become my thesis project. Right now I am in the process of collecting background information and starting the writing process, but as soon as that is done I would like to begin collecting data. This is where all you readers come in; I really want to talk to you and hear your thoughts! I am hoping that by the end of the summer I will be able to start interviewing people. If this is something that you are at all interested in being a part of, please send me an email at Broekema.ka@gmail.com

This initial topic has grown much more than I would have ever imagined. As I was doing my research I realized there is no research connecting communication and Cystic Fibrosis or any other genetic diseases. Having a genetic disease presents a unique set of variables and situations that need to be navigated, but there is lack of research on how this all is communicated. Therefore, I am in the beginning stages of many other research ideas involving Cystic Fibrosis and communication. If you would like to be involved, or if you have another area that you think really needs attention, let me know. My goal with my research is not to do research for research-sake, but for the real application into the lives of people with Cystic Fibrosis. So letting me know what you think is incredibly important and makes what I am doing matter. If you have any ideas, please send me an email. I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Thank you all so much in advance for your help, and thank you Ronnie for letting me share my thoughts in your blog. It was such a great honor to write this for RSBR and this blog is really making a difference in a lot of people?s lives.

BIO: Katie is 22 years old and has lived in Michigan her whole life. She graduated from Albion College with a double major in computer science and communication, and she is currently working on a Master?s degree from Central Michigan University in communication; with a focus on health communication. In her spare time, Katie enjoys finding new research topics, preparing to teach her COM 101 classes, helping coach the local high school cross country and track teams, running, cooking and convincing various family members that they should get her a Pomsky puppy. (Look them up, they are adorable!) She would love to hear back from people who have read her posts, her email is Broekema.ka@gmail.com

Note from Ronnie: I would just like to thank Katie for submitting, not one, but TWO great guest posts. I hope she was able to inspire some of you to get out and get active after reading what she has learned through running with Cystic Fibrosis. Also, anyone who is interested in contributing to her thesis, please email her to "get in on the action". I believe this is a very important topic that needs to be explored and I'm really looking forward to what her research brings forth.
