UFC on Fox 8?s Three Stars: Robbie Lawler among the fighters who stood out

UFC on Fox 8 was filled with split decisions and a fight that UFC president Dana White trashed. However, there were some standout performances. Who were the Three Stars?

No. 1 star -- Robbie Lawler: Of all the fighters who joined the UFC after Strikeforce folded, who did you expect to really shine? It's unlikely Robbie Lawler was on the top five of your list as he was just 2-3 in his five fights before returning to the UFC. He made a complete turnaround, knocking out Josh Koscheck in February before putting a beatdown on Robbie Voelker on Saturday night.

No. 2 star -- Melvin Guillard: Riding a two-fight losing streak, Guillard knew he had to win to keep his job with the UFC. Guillard delivered. He knocked out Mac Danzig with enough power to earn a Knockout of the Night bonus and pick up some job security.

No. 3 star -- Demetrious Johnson: The flyweight champion held onto his belt and convinced anyone who didn't believe in his abilities with a fifth-round submission of John Moraga. Before that submission with an armbar, Johnson beat up on Moraga for 23 minutes and 43 seconds, showing why he holds the belt.

Who stood out from Saturday's fights for you? Speak up on Facebook and Twitter.

Hoku, Solar and Fuel Cell Aspirant, Bankrupt With $1B in Debt

Hoku Corp just filed for bankruptcy in Pocatello federal court according to reports in the Idaho State Journal.

Hoku started out as a fuel cell membrane and materials company, went public in 2005 on little revenue, and then pivoted to becoming a solar polysilicon manufacturer. The company also tried its hand at solar installation in home-state Hawaii with $1.6 million in 2013 revenue, according to reports in Hawaii's Star Advertiser.

The firm's stock was delisted from the Nasdaq last year. The company is now $1 billion in debt to 30 creditors including Tianwei and the Idaho plant's main construction contractor. Hoku is a subsidiary of Tianwei New Energy Holdings, which is an affiliate of China South Industries Group Corporation (CSGC). CSGC is a mammoth firm with 191,000 employees. Tianwei manufactures polysilicon, wafers, cells and modules.

In 2012, in a case of questionable timing, Hoku was looking to open up a long-threatened $700 million polysilicon plant in Pocatello, Idaho -- a factory looking to supply a transitioning and hobbled market. Hoku's CFO and CEO resigned around that time while the company was having difficulty paying its Idaho electric bill. Hoku had received $280 million in prepayments from PV panel manufacturers such as Hanwa SolarOne, Tianwei New Energy, Jinko Solar, and and a small prepayment from Suntech for polysilicon to be delivered between 2012 and 2016. The firm has been threatening to build the Idaho factory since 2008 -- when polysilicon was more expensive than today.

The firm never really had a technological differentaition in silicon manufacturing or in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM)? fuel cells. Nor did it seem to have a strategic business plan, other than to go public and pay its executives.

Perhaps its Chinese Fortune 1000 conglomerate parent will engineer a financial rescue of the firm.

Apple hires former Yves Saint Laurent boss

Apple Inc has brought on board Paul Deneve, the erstwhile CEO of French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent, as Special Projects vice president.

Deneve, a sales and marketing manager for Apple in Europe between 1990-97, resigned from YSL earlier this week, saying he was looking for a new opportunity in the tech sector.

The 52-year-old Belgian has also worked for Courreges, Lanvin and Nina Ricci.

"We're thrilled to welcome Paul Deneve to Apple," company spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said in a statement. "He'll be working on special projects as a vice president reporting directly to Tim Cook", CEO of the California-based tech giant.

Analysts saw Deneve's appointment as a sign that Apple is serious about exploring the possibilities of wearable computing and is alert to the trend of a merging of technology with fashion.

It was revealed on Monday that the technology giant has applied for a trademark for "iWatch" in Japan. The trademark application, submitted on June 3 and released on the Japan Patent Office website on June 27, would cover computers, computer peripherals and wristwatches

Ford's New Prototyping Machine Turns Sheet Metal Into Custom Parts

A modern assembly line can churn out a new vehicle every few minutes, but when carmakers want to build and test a prototype, it takes weeks to produce the dies and moulds needed to stamp out a custom one-off part. So Ford has developed a fantastic new prototyping machine that functions kind of like a 3D printer in that it can produce a custom part in mere hours. Except that instead of plastic, it works its magic on sheet metal.

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix review

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix review

It's been six months since Lenovo launched the ThinkPad Helix at CES, but during that time we've never really stopped talking about it. Every time we've reviewed a comparable product -- a small-ish PC that could be used in some sort of tablet mode -- we've returned to the Helix as a beacon of what could be in this category. All told, the Helix has had a few things potentially recommending it: it rocks the same sturdy, well-spaced keyboard you'll find on other ThinkPads and a spec list that includes NFC, a Wacom pen digitizer and a high-quality, 11.6-inch, 1080p display. Best of all, the Helix can be used in three ways: not just in tablet mode, but with the tablet inserted either facing the user or pointed away, a design Lenovo is calling "Rip n' Flip." It's the sort of versatility we loved so much in Lenovo's Yoga line; only this is a more compact machine with a higher-res screen and pen input. Sounds lovely, right? Read on to see if it's as good in practice as it is on paper.

Witness: Bulger protected my drug operation

BOSTON (AP) ? A former drug dealer says he made about $200,000 a year when James "Whitey" Bulger (BUHL'-jur) protected his narcotics operation.

Joseph Tower testified Tuesday in the reputed gangster's trial that Bulger also saved Tower's brother when he was being held hostage after trying to collect a drug debt.

Tower, who received immunity from prosecution, has said he went into business with Bulger in 1980.

Tower says Bulger was so feared that his drug operatives knew they had the protection they needed to carry out their illegal business, the proceeds of which Bulger shared.

Bulger had pleaded not guilty to charges against him, which include participating in 19 slayings. The 83-year-old fled Boston in 1994 and was one of the nation's most wanted fugitives until his 2011 capture.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

A former FBI agent who admitted taking payoffs from James "Whitey" Bulger appeared to choke back tears as he offered a dramatic apology to the family of one of the reputed gangster's alleged murder victims.

"Not a day in my life has gone by that I haven't thought about this. Not a day in my life has gone by that I haven't prayed that God gives you blessing and comfort for the pain that you suffered," John Morris, his voice cracking, told a widow and her three sons Monday during cross-examination by a defense lawyer at Bulger's racketeering trial.

The 83-year-old Bulger is charged with participating in 19 murders in the 1970s and '80s while he allegedly led the notorious Winter Hill Gang.

Morris testified that he told fellow FBI agent John Connolly that Edward "Brian" Halloran had given authorities information about a murder Bulger's gang was suspected of committing. At the time, both Morris and Connolly ? his subordinate ? had corrupt relationships with Bulger, who he said was a longtime FBI informant at the same time he was committing a litany of crimes.

Prosecutors say Halloran and Michael Donahue ? an innocent bystander who had offered Halloran a ride home ? were killed in 1982 after Connolly leaked the information to Bulger. Bulger is accused of opening fire on the car as the two men left a Boston restaurant.

Morris' voice cracked as he looked at Donahue's widow, Patricia, and his three grown sons seated in the courtroom. Morris apologized for "things that I may have done and things that I didn't do."

Patricia Donahue said she believes Morris was sincere, but his apology came "way, way too late."

"Those words didn't mean anything to me," she said. "While he's getting his (FBI) promotions, I'm mourning my husband."

Morris testified earlier that he played "no direct role" in the two killings. He said he believed Halloran was in protective custody and was about to enter the federal witness protection program when he talked to Connolly about him.

"It was spontaneous," he said. "I didn't plan it. It just happened. I wish it hadn't."

Bulger attorney Hank Brennan asked Morris if he knew he was "signing Mr. Halloran's death warrant" by telling Connolly he was cooperating against Bulger.

"I thought he was safe," Morris said.

Morris admitted taking $7,000 in payoffs, two cases of wine and other gifts from Bulger and the gang. He was given immunity from prosecution for his testimony during hearings in the 1990s and later for his testimony against Connolly in two separate trials in Massachusetts and Florida.

Connolly was convicted of racketeering and second-degree murder for leaking information to Bulger and the gang. It was a tip from Connolly that prompted Bulger to flee Boston in 1994. He was one of the nation's most wanted fugitives until he was finally captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011.

Bulger has pleaded not guilty and denies being an informant for the FBI.

In other testimony Monday, prosecutors called a former drug dealer who said he went into business with Bulger in 1980.

Joseph Tower, who received immunity from prosecution, said he was a musician and a cocaine and marijuana dealer when he first met Bulger. He said he was approached by a Bulger associate who offered to protect him and his customers from harassment by others trying to cut into his business.

Tower, who said the business was selling about a kilo of cocaine every week, called Bulger the "protection" in the organization and said Bulger regularly collected his share of the profits.

Bulger laughed audibly several times as Tower testified energetically about how Bulger's name instilled fear in people.

'Truly unimaginable loss': 19 firefighters killed battling Arizona blaze

Fanned by hot winds, a deadly blaze exploded out of control on Sunday in Arizona, overtaking 19 firefighters, 18 of them from the same elite Prescott, Ariz., Granite Mountain Hotshots team. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

By Ian Johnston and Andrew Rafferty, NBC News

Nineteen firefighters - all members of an elite response team - were killed Sunday battling a fast-moving wildfire in Arizona, marking the deadliest single incident for firefighters since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, officials said.

In a statement, President Barack Obama said the "thoughts and prayers" of all Americans would be with the loved ones of the firefighters killed near the town of Yarnell, Ariz., about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix. He described the fallen men as "heroes."

The fire, which investigators believe was sparked by lightning, also destroyed more than 200 buildings in the town, which is home to about 700 people.

Wade Ward, the public information officer for the Prescott Fire Department in Arizona, talks about the tragic loss of 19 firefighters in a massive wildfire, saying "it had to be the perfect storm in order for this to happen."

Mary Rasmussen, a spokeswoman for the Prescott National Forest, said all 19 killed were members of the 20-strong Granite Mountain Hotshots, a Prescott, Ariz.-based crew who battled blazes in New Mexico and Arizona in recent weeks.

Juliann Ashcraft told azcentral.com that she learned her firefighter husband Andrew was dead while watching the news with her four children. ?They died heroes,? she said through tears. ?And we?ll miss them. We love them.?

Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo said that "if you ever met them, you would meet the finest, most dedicated people." ?

"These are the guys that will go out there with 40, 50 pounds of equipment. They'll sleep out there as they try to develop fire lines and put protection between homes and natural resources and still try to remain safe," he said.

Fraijo said the one surviving member of the Hotshots crew had been at a different location.?

Rasmussen, who also works as a wildland firefighter, said the men who died in the Yarnell Hill Fire were ?young and brave.?

?They went out as a 20-person crew and they have confirmed 19 fatalities,? she said. ?Every day they took on risks. They were alert to those risks, but in this case [there were] extreme burning conditions, some unusual wind and then we?re waiting to see whatever else, what other factors may be involved."

Rasmussen said she knew the crew who died, saying they were part of a ?close-knit community? of wildland firefighters.

David Kadlubowski / The Arizona Republic via AP

The deadly wildfire also destroyed homes in the Glenn Ilah area near Yarnell, Ariz, on Sunday.

?It hits hard. It hits deep,? she said. ?There?s a lot of people suffering tonight.?

Authorities told the Associated Press that the 19 were caught while trying to deploy their fire shelters, tents designed to trap in breathable air and shield the firefighters from flames and heat.

"The general understanding is they were participating in a direct attack on the fire,? Rasmussen added.

This would have involved getting close to the flames ? ?one foot in the black and one foot in the green? - and trying to create a fire break devoid of fuel, she said.

A web page for the Granite Mountain Hotshots describes the team?s ?history of safe and aggressive fire suppression.?

?Our common bond is our love of hard work and arduous adventure,? it says. ?We are routinely exposed to extreme environmental conditions, long work hours, long travel hours and the most demanding of fireline tasks.?

Wade Ward, a spokesman for the Prescott Fire Department, told NBC's TODAY that ?it had to be a perfect storm in order for this to happen? to the Hotshots.

?Their situational awareness and there training was at such a high level that it?s unimaginable that this has happened,? he said.

The National Fire Protection Association website says the only wildland fires to kill more people were at Griffith Park, Los Angeles, in 1933, where 29 died, and the Devil?s Broom wildfire at Silverton, Idaho, in 1910, in which 86 firefighters lost their lives. The attack on the World Trade Center resulted in the deaths of 340 firefighters.

/

Dry conditions fuel blazes in the U.S.

The blaze, which started Friday, began during a punishing heat wave in which temperatures reached well into triple-digits. Fraijo said the hot, dry conditions fueled the fire.

About 200 firefighters were battling the blaze late Sunday and some 400 were being deployed Monday.

Trudy Thompson Rice, communications officer for the Grand Canyon chapter of the American Red Cross, was at a Red Cross shelter set up at Wickenburg High School, where 15 evacuees from the Yarnell area were sleeping early Monday.

?They are sad. They know a lot of them [the firefighters who died],? she said. ?They know families, they know people in the fire services.?

?You don?t want to lose any firefighters, but it?s your neighbors it makes it particularly difficult. They do hand-to-hand combat with these fires and it?s very difficult work.?

Thompson Rice said people at the school were also concerned for the firefighters who had to go back out to deal with the wildfire. ?They [the evacuees] are hopeful they can get the fire under control so there?s time for grief,? she added.

Chuck Overmyer and his wife, Ninabill, were helping friends leave when the blaze switched directions and moved toward their home, the Associated Press reported. They loaded up what belongings they could, including three dogs and a 1930 model hot rod on a trailer.

As he looked out his rear view mirror, he could see embers on the roof of his garage. "We knew it was gone," he said.

Obama said in a statement that the firefighters were ?heroes -- highly-skilled professionals who, like so many across our country do every day, selflessly put themselves in harm's way to protect the lives and property of fellow citizens they would never meet.?

He added: ?Michelle and I join all Americans in sending our thoughts and prayers to the families of these brave firefighters and all whose lives have been upended by this terrible tragedy.?

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said Sunday was ?as dark a day as I can remember,? speaking of a ?truly unimaginable loss.?

Senator John McCain said in a statement that the relatives of those who died were ?in the thoughts and prayers of all Americans.?

?This devastating loss is a reminder of the grave risks our firefighters take every day on our behalf in Arizona and in communities across this nation. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,? he said.

Greg Stanton, the mayor of Phoenix, said in a message posted on his Facebook page that ?this terrible tragedy is one of the worst in the history of firefighting and a solemn reminder of the extraordinary danger our first responders face every day.?

Observing live gene expression in the body

June 30, 2013 ? Most of our physiological functions fluctuate throughout the day. They are coordinated by a central clock in the brain and by local oscillators, present in virtually every cell. Many molecular gearwheels of this internal clock have been described by Ueli Schibler, professor at the Faculty of Science of the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland. To study how the central clock synchronizes subordinate oscillators, the researcher's group used a variety of genetic and technological tools developed in collaboration with a team of UNIGE physicians. In this way, the scientists were able to directly observe the bioluminescence emitted by 'clock genes' in mice for several months. This biotechnology is applicable to numerous sectors of biomedical research, which attracted the attention of the editors from the journal Genes & Development.

In mammals, there are many behaviors and biological functions that are regulated by internal clocks. Most of our cells have one, made from a family of 'clock genes', whose cyclic activity reaches a specific peak in 24 hours. These local oscillators are synchronized by a central 'pacemaker' in the brain which adjusts to light.

The firefly lights the way

The use of genetic engineering techniques enabled the study of molecular mechanisms that activate clock genes directly in cultured mammalian cells: "We have coupled several of these genes to that of luciferase, the enzyme used by the female firefly for producing green light to attract males," explained Ueli Schibler, member of the National Research Center Frontiers in Genetics. When a specific clock gene is activated in a cell that was transformed in this way, the light signal emitted can be measured using a highly sensitive bioluminescence detector. However, this device, which is capable of detecting signals on the order of a few photons, cannot be used for studying whole organisms. The contribution of Andr? Liani's mechanical workshop, along with Jean-Pierre Wolf's and Luigi Bonacina's teams from UNIGE's Group of Applied Physics, was thus essential. These scientists developed a customized device that can accommodate mice for several months: "We equipped it with reflective walls to deflect photons toward a highly sensitive photomultiplier tube to capture bioluminescence," says Andr? Liani.

Follow the daily expression of clock genes live?

In collaboration with the University of Ulm and the Center for Integrative Genomics (CIG) of Lausanne, the biologists studied how the central clock synchronizes subordinate oscillators in mice. Various clock genes, coupled with the luciferase gene for light emission, were inserted into liver cells using a molecular vector. The time these rodents spent in the bioluminescent device allowed to demonstrate that the central clock generates signals, some of which act directly on the liver oscillators, and others which synchronize them indirectly by controlling the cycles of food intake.

?or the effect of a medication in mice

"This technology enables a drastic reduction in the number of mice needed for this type of experiment, and furthermore, it is applicable to many areas of biomedical research," says Camille Saini, researcher in the Department of Molecular Biology at UNIGE and first author of this article. These complementary genetic and engineering technology tools could be used to directly follow certain biochemical effects of metabolites like cholesterol or glucose, as well as the response to potential treatments of diseases such as hypercholesterolemia or diabetes. Monitoring the response to various hormones, neurotransmitters and other biochemical messengers is also part of this application range.

El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser takes office eager to learn about his team

Click photo to enlarge

El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser

After winning with 76 percent of the vote in the June 11 runoff election, Mayor Oscar Leeser is finally in office.

Moving from car dealership owner to mayor calls for some learning on the job, he said. Leeser said his first goal is to become more familiar with the city departments and what they do for residents. After that, the budget will be a primary focus.

With less than one week on the job and a little under four more years to go, Leeser talked about being El Paso's new mayor.

Q: What has the transition been like?

A: You know it's been great. We had our first City Council meeting on Tuesday. It went real well; we set a good tempo.

I really like the City Council we have. I think the voters have put a good council together, and in just one meeting alone you can see how well we are working together, and I was real impressed with that.

Q: After your first meeting, what did you think? Was it easier to be up there? Harder?

A: You know what, harder, it was basically what I thought. I've been on boards with different organizations, so I knew what to expect.

Q: Now that you are in office, what is the first issue you want to tackle?

A: The first thing we needed to do and we've been doing that, when you showed up I was in a meeting, is we want to meet with department heads; we want to meet the people that work for our city.

We have great, great people, and that's been the best part

so far. The people who are here are excited, and that's the best thing so far.

Q: How long will that take? Are you seeking feedback from them or setting a new direction?

A: I want to introduce myself to them and I want to learn what they do. I don't have a time limit because I want to take my time and meet everybody and understand their role in bettering our city.

Q: Are there any issues that have come up in City Hall in the past six months that you want to bring back or place on an agenda?

A: You know, not at this point. We've only been in office a little bit. You're here on day three, and you are my first interview. We're just kind of going in and doing what we said we are going to do and take our time and meet the people and understand their needs and wants.

Q: A big part of your campaign was financial responsibility. Have you started to look at budgets and thinking about adjustments?

A: We're starting on that. Mid-July is when we go into budget negotiations, so we are getting ready to start that. That is going to be one of our priorities, to look at the budget and make sure that we do the right thing going forward and try to balance it.

Q: Is there anything off the top of your head that you want to focus on going into the budget meetings?

A: Until I see it, I really don't have one item I want to look at.

Q: One of the things Mayor John Cook left behind was the beginning of the mass transit system. Do you have any plans to continue in that direction, adjust or add to it?

A: Again, until I really look at it I can't tell you what I need to adjust. Looking at it is a great thing because we are going to look at every department. We are going to look at everything and make sure that it is working efficiently. And that's the key, making sure everything is working the right way. Every time we do something, we want to make sure we are maximized.

Q: Is there anything externally that you have on your agenda in the next few weeks?

A: No, not really.

Q: Is there any new direction that you would like the City Council or city staff to take or at least start researching?

A: No. You know right now the key is to work together and that we work toward the same common goal. It is really important to me to make sure we respect each other, respect our employees and respect the community. And for the community to respect us. So it's really important that we work in a professional manner.

Q: Asking City Manager Joyce Wilson to stay was a move you made before you even took office. For some, it was a move met with praise, and for some it was met with criticism. What was your response?

A: It's really important that we continue with continuity, and we have a lot of open projects. We have the baseball park, we have the quality-of-life bonds and we have a lot of things that we want to make sure are executed and executed properly. And it was really important to have continuity. So it's a plus. Plus, we don't want to rush into looking for a new city manager. That gives us a year or so to start the process and make sure the process is done properly and we pick a person that will fit in perfect for our community.

Q: And is there anything else you would like to add or let the community know about yourself as the new mayor?

A: My commitment is to work hard and to bring trust and honesty.

We will do that. We will work hard and make sure that we work as a unit, work as one and make sure we have a common goal for the community of El Paso.

(AP Photo/Orlando Sentinel, Joe Burbank, Pool)

(AP) ? Jurors in the George Zimmerman trial on Monday listened to a series of police interviews with detectives growing more pointed in their questioning of the neighborhood watch volunteer's account of how he came to fatally shoot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Prosecutors played audio and video tapes of the interviews that Zimmerman had with Sanford Police investigators Doris Singleton and Chris Serino in the hours and days after he fatally shot the Miami teen.

In an early interview, just hours after the Feb. 26, 2012, shooting, Singleton recounted that Zimmerman noticed a cross she was wearing and said: "In Catholic religion, it's always wrong to kill someone."

Singleton said she responded, "If what you're telling me is true, I don't think that what God meant was that you couldn't save your own life."

But in an interview several days later, Singleton and Serino suggest Zimmerman was running after Martin before the confrontation. They also ask the neighborhood watch volunteer why he didn't explain to Martin why he was following him. The officers insinuate that Martin may have been "creeped out" by being followed.

"Do you think he was scared?" Singleton asked Zimmerman in one video interview.

Under cross-examination, though, Serino said Zimmerman seemed straightforward in his answers and didn't show any anger when talking about Martin. Serino said the increasingly pointed questioning was a tactic known as a "challenge interview" where detectives try to break someone's story to make sure they're telling the truth.

Zimmerman has said he fatally shot the teen in self-defense because the Miami-area black teenager was banging his head into the concrete sidewalk behind the townhomes in a gated community.

Zimmerman, 29, could get life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder. The state argued during its opening statement that Zimmerman profiled and followed Martin in his truck and called a police dispatch number before he and the teen got into a fight. He has denied the confrontation had anything to do with race, as Martin's family and their supporters have claimed.

In his first interview at the police station, Zimmerman said he saw Martin walking through his neighborhood on a dark, rainy night while Zimmerman was driving to the grocery store. He told Singleton that he didn't recognize Martin and that there had been recent break-ins at his townhome complex.

"These guys always get away," Zimmerman told Singleton, a statement similar to one that prosecutors have used previously to try to show that Zimmerman was increasingly frustrated with the burglaries and his encounter with Martin was a breaking point.

Zimmerman told the police officer that he lost track of Martin and got out of his truck to look for a street name he could relay to police dispatcher. When the dispatcher suggested Zimmerman didn't need to follow Martin, Zimmerman started to head back to his vehicle. At that point, Zimmerman said Martin jumped out of some bushes, punched him and he fell to the ground.

Zimmerman said that Martin began hitting his head against the sidewalk as Zimmerman yelled for help and that Martin told him, "You're going to die tonight."

With Zimmerman's shirt and jacket pushed up during the struggle and his holstered gun now visible, he thought Martin was reaching for his firearm holstered around his waist. Zimmerman told the officer that he shot Martin and the teen said, "You got me."

In a written statement, Singleton read in court, Zimmerman refers to Martin as "the suspect." Singleton said it didn't appear that Zimmerman showed any anger when talking about the teen. Prosecutors must show that Zimmerman acted with ill will or a depraved mind in order to get a second-degree murder conviction.

Zimmerman also acted surprised when Singleton told him Martin was dead.

"He's dead?!" Singleton recalled Zimmerman saying, before he lowered his head toward the table in the interrogation room.

Earlier Monday, prosecutors called FBI audio expert Hirotaka Nakasone to focus on the issue of who was screaming for help on 911 calls during the confrontation. Jurors were played the 911 calls several times last week.

The recordings are crucial pieces of evidence because they could determine who the aggressor was in the confrontation. Martin's family contends it was the teen screaming, while Zimmerman's father has said it was his son.

Even though he was a pre-trial witness for the defense, prosecutors called Nakasone to set up later testimony from either the teen's mother or father that they believe it was their son yelling for help.

During his pre-trial testimony, Nakasone testified that there wasn't enough clear sound to determine whether Zimmerman or Martin was screaming on the best 911 sample, an assertion he repeated Monday.

The FBI expert said that it's easier for a person with a familiarity of a voice to identify it than someone who has never heard it previously. That is especially true if the recording is of a subject screaming and the person trying to identify the voice has heard the subject under similarly stressful circumstances previously, Nakasone said.

Intergalactic magnifying glasses could help astronomers map galaxy centers

June 30, 2013 ? An international team of astronomers may have found a new way to map quasars, the energetic and luminous central regions often found in distant galaxies. Team leader Prof. Andy Lawrence of the University of Edinburgh presents the new results on Monday 1 July at the RAS National Astronomy Meeting in St Andrews, Scotland.

If a star passes too close to a giant black hole found in the centre of a galaxy, it will be shredded by the strong gravitational field. This produces a flare-up in the brightness of an otherwise normal looking galaxy that then fades over a few months. In a large scale survey using the PanSTARRS telescope on Hawaii, Prof. Lawrence and his team studied millions of galaxies to search for this rare effect. They did find flare-ups but with very different behaviour to the 'star shredding' predictions.

Instead of seeing a fade over months, the objects they found look like 'normal' quasars, regions in the centre of galaxies where material is swirling around a giant black hole in a disk. But the quasars in the survey were not seen a decade ago, so must now be at least ten times brighter than before. Monitoring with the Liverpool Telescope on La Palma showed that they are also changing slowly, fading over a timescale of years rather than months.

The biggest surprise however was that the quasars seemed to be at the wrong distance. Measuring the characteristic shift in lines found in the spectrum of the quasars allows astronomers to measure the speed at which they are moving away from Earth. Knowing the way in which the universe is expanding enables scientists to deduce the distance to each object.

In the new survey, the quasars are typically around 10 billion light years away, whereas the galaxies that host them seem on average to be about 3 billion light years distant. The distances are rough estimates, so it could be that the estimated galaxy distances are completely wrong and that they are actually much further away. The black holes in their centres have then have flared up very dramatically, explaining why they seem so bright. But past studies of thousands of well-known quasars have never shown events on this scale.

If however the estimated galaxy distances are right, then Prof. Lawrence and his team believe they are looking at a distant quasar through a foreground galaxy. Normally this has little effect on the light of the quasar, but if a single star in the foreground galaxy passes exactly in front of the quasar, it can produce a gravitational focusing of the light which makes the background quasar seem temporarily much brighter.

This "microlensing" phenomenon is well known inside our own Galaxy, producing a brightening when one star passes in front of another. (It is for example also now being used to detect exoplanets). Microlensing may also be the cause of low-level "flickering" seen in some quasars. But this is the first time it has been suggested to cause such giant brightening events.

Prof. Lawrence sees real potential in this newly-discovered effect. "This could give us a way to map out the internal structure of quasars in a way that is otherwise impossible, because quasars are so small. As the star moves across the face of the distant quasar, it is like scanning a magnifying glass across it, revealing details that would otherwise simply be impossible to detect."
