NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple says it sold 3 million iPads of all kinds in the first three days it sold the new Mini model.

Apple started selling the Mini on Friday, starting at $329. It's a third smaller than the full-size iPad.

The sales figure compares with 1.5 million iPads sold in the first three days after Apple launched the third-generation iPad in March and cut the price of the iPad 2.

The full-size iPad got an update on Friday as well, with a faster processor and a better front-facing camera.

The launch encompassed 34 countries, including the U.S., Japan, Germany and Britain. According to analyst Brian White at Topeka Capital Markets, the Mini model sold out at 60 percent of U.S. Apple stores.

The Difference Between Winning Projects or Winning Customers ...

In previous posts I mentioned the fantastic times the IT services industry is experiencing with the increasing investment in technology areas such as big data, cloud or enterprise mobility. Regardless of this momentum, IT services companies still need to address some of the biggest challenges of their business model such as the long term commitment of customers and the ability to generate recurrent revenue. Even though the new times have brought new and creative models for generating recurrent revenue, the simplest way to achieve that remains converting isolated projects into long term customers.

Even though winning long term customers is the cornerstone of a successful IT services business, most professional services firm struggle to achieve a continuous conversion of isolated projects into strategic and long term relationship that deliver continuous values to both parties. To this day, most IT services firms still rely on the notion of an account manager as the main mechanism to establish a long term relationship with a customer.

In this traditional model, an account manager is responsible for generating a continuous pipeline of service engagements based on the customer needs. The problem with this model is very simple: while account managers can be relatively effective in the tactical and operational aspects they rarely deliver any value at the strategic level. To give an example, in the traditional model, the account manager will get involved after the customer has identified a specific project and needs to explore different options to execute that solution. However, the account manager would rarely be seen as a strategic?advisory?that can guide the customer to arrive to the best solution to the challenges. Because of the simple fact that strategic collaborations are more likely to evolve into long term relationships, IT services organizations commonly fail to obtain a seat at the table where decisions are made and are often seen as an effective arm to deliver a predefined project.

While the account manager model still very valid and necessary, it is important to realize that in this fast changing technology world, IT services organizations have a unique opportunity to provide a lot of extra value to their customers. These days, organizations need all the help they can get positioning themselves to embrace the new technology waves. The new world is very different from the traditional IT world, excellent talent is scarce and the plethora of competitive technology stacks is overwhelming for any CIO. In that sense, most IT organizations are fighting the urge to be more mobile, deliver additional levels of intelligence big data technologies or embrace cloud delivery models because they are afraid of making rookie mistakes.

This new world offers a unique window of opportunities to the new generation of IT professional services providers. Plain and simple: the easiest way to generate recurrent revenue is to deliver additional value to your customers at the strategic level, helping them understand the new technological options and how they relate to their immediate business needs. We don?t need account managers as much as we need IT services firm that can go the extra mile to deliver strategic value for their customers even if not direct revenue stream is attached to the effort.

British lawmakers roast taxman over Starbucks tax bill

LONDON (Reuters) - UK lawmakers tore into the chief of the tax authority on Monday for allowing coffee chain Starbucks to pay almost no corporation tax despite selling coffee and snacks worth billions of pounds to British customers.

Members of parliament on the Public Accounts Committee, which is tasked with ensuring value in government financial affairs, said Starbucks's low tax payments had undermined public trust in the whole tax system.

The low tax payments from Starbucks have become a political issue in Britain since they were revealed in a Reuters investigation last month.

"It just smells and it doesn't smell of coffee. It smells bad," Richard Bacon, member of parliament with the governing Conservative party, told Lin Homer, Chief Executive of the tax authority, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

"It beggars belief that such a large entity with so much underlying activity here can pay so little in corporation tax," he added.

Reuters reported last month that Starbucks had paid no corporation, or income, tax in the past three years and had paid only 8.6 million pounds ($13.74 million) in total over 13 years during which it recorded sales of 3.1 billion pounds.

The company avoided UK taxes by reporting losses to HMRC, even as it told investors its UK operation was profitable.

Homer declined to comment on Starbucks, citing taxpayer confidentiality, but said the agency ensured that businesses paid the taxes they should.

Starbucks was not available for comment. The coffee giant, which has a market capitalization of about $39 billion, has previously said it sought to pay its fair share of taxes in every country where it operates.

One of the ways that Starbucks minimizes its British profits and therefore its UK tax liability, as revealed in the Reuters investigation, is by having the UK unit pay large royalties to its subsidiaries in other countries for use of its brand.

Starbucks pays a larger share of British sales as royalties to subsidiaries outside Britain than rivals such as McDonald's. Margaret Hodge, head of the committee, said that showed that the tax office's procedures were lacking.

"Either the skills of your individuals aren't good enough or you're not getting underneath it," she told Homer.

The lawmakers also challenged Homer's assertion that existing rules designed to stop companies shifting profits out of the countries where they originate worked well.

Hodge cited other companies including Google and Apple which have racked up billions of pounds in UK sales but paid almost no tax in the country.

By channeling sales through low tax countries such as Ireland, Google managed to reduce the tax rate on $7.6 billion of non-U.S. profits to just 3.2 percent last year. Apple's tax bill on $36.8 billion of foreign income was 1.9 percent, the company's regulatory filings show. ($1 = 0.6260 British pounds)

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A Las Vegas resort criticized for a suggestive ad campaign promoting Guns N' Roses shows is apologizing for the flap and changing the artwork.

Ads for the band's four-week run at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino depicted a disheveled woman who appeared to be sexually assaulted beneath the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign.

The artwork came to the attention of county commissioners after they temporarily renamed a street Paradise City Road in honor of the band's famous song.

Rape crisis groups decried the campaign, saying it glorified domestic violence and could re-traumatize victims.

The Hard Rock issued a statement saying it regrets that the campaign offended members of the community, and it started modifying the ads Friday.

With free video chat services on web pages, there are just two of these. One of them is capturing your video stream and sending it to the other end of the conversation. At the same time, there is another stream coming right to the video area on your end. So really, it's just two live streams between exclusive machines.

But, consider the nature of video. An image over cable internet takes a few seconds to receive and render. Double that for sending it to another person to receive and view. Now, with webcam chat, you have video, which is many, many images and sound at the same time. This is a heavy thing. Web browsers used to not have the power to handle this. At one time, even bandwidth restrictions were present.

All this in mind, it's not surprising that while the video phone concept has been a long time predicted and awaited, its current incarnation wasn't really possible until near the end of the past decade. It will be very interesting to see what continued improvement of bandwidth computing power and browser capacity will make this able to do in the future.
